Cat Health
Owning a pet comes with certain responsibilities. You need to
feed and groom it as well as keep it away from various diseases. This is the
essence of cat care and health and if done correctly, they can live 10 years or
more.
Vaccinating cats is the most effective way to
prevent disease. This also prevents the cat from becoming a carrier of disease.
Some common vaccines used are for feline influenza, feline leukemia or Flevo,
feline Chlamydophila’s, and feline infectious enteritis or FIE.
If your cat has been vaccinated, be aware that
he may experience certain side effects. This should go away quickly, even if
they develop flu-like symptoms or fatigue over the next few days. In rare
cases, the cat may develop cancer at the injection site, which may develop over
a period of weeks, months or even years.
Cats, like humans, have allergies. This can come
from pollen, dust, disinfectants, and other things. If you notice your cat has
symptoms, you should stop using these products, keep them away from plants, and
keep your home clean.
Another problem your cat may have is fleas and
ticks. You'll know they're there if they scratch more often than usual. You
should check around the neck for black spots by using a specialized flea comb
to examine the fur deeper. Flea and tick treatment is done by dabbing a small
amount of liquid on the back of the neck once a month. For those that are
already there, you can tear them off one by one with tweezers or apply Vaseline
to the concerned skin area. Always wear rubber gloves when doing these so
bacteria don't transfer to your fingers.
Unlike the fleas and ticks you may see; cat
worms are found inside their digestive system. There are three types of
hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms. If left untreated, they will have an upset
stomach that at times can be fatal.
The best way to prevent this from happening is
to give them worming tablets annually. But if it is already there, then you
have to get a prescribed medicine from your doctor. Another option is to use a
tick remover spray that is available in pet stores. You will notice a wound
when the tick or flea is removed. This needs to be treated by bathing the area
with salt water to prevent an infection from developing.
Cats can damage and injure humans. You can
prevent this from happening by providing them with a clipboard to play with and
trimming their nails regularly.
Have you ever heard that curiosity killed the
cat? Well, this also happens if they move freely around your house. To prevent
this from happening, make sure to close all cabinets and windows and hide
medications and rat poison.
